Air Pressure Gauge

An air pressure gauge is a device that is used to measure the pressure of air in a confined area. Most common applications of such a device is found in measuring tire pressure, air pressure in vaults and laboratories and more advanced ones find usage in meteorological divisions. State of the art air pressure gauges are also used to measure altitude and for various other purposes.

What is an Air Pressure Gauge?

It is a device which measures the pressure exerted by air contained in a sealed environment (tire or a cylinder) and converts the communication into different calculable units such as kg/cm2, bar, psi, mm/hg, kpa, mbar or mm/wc. An air pressure gauge may comprise of a nozzle which has a pressure sensor, a microcontroller or microprocessor inside and a display. Displays normally are of LCD but LED panels have been introduced in many of the latest models. Some of these latest models have audio output facility, memory functions to store recorded data and calibration facilities.

How does an Air Pressure Gauge Function?

Earlier, air pressure gauges used to come with a long pipe connecting the nozzle and the dial display but these days they are mostly small devices resembling a pen or just a small tool. Using an air pressure gauge is very simple. You simply need to put the valve (of tires, cylinders etc) into the nozzle and notice the reading on the display. You must have preselected the unit of the gauge at the time of buying so you can read the measurement accordingly. Apart from measuring and reading the pressure, all other functions vary among different models. To explore other specific functions, you would have to run through the manual.

Different types of Air Pressure Gauge!

The most common of all air pressure gauges is the one which only allows you to capture a reading and nothing else. Some models allow a bleeder which automatically allows excess air to pass through its valve to bring down the air pressure to the required level. This function would be available on models where you can cap a specific measurement and the device would function accordingly. The air pressure gauges that are used for commercial purposes are mostly associated with an air supply chamber. In these devices an air pressure gauge merely acts as a check to allow a certain amount of air to be passed on to the receiving containment to achieve a specific pressure.

Things to Check Before Buying an Air Pressure Gauge!

The most common factor while buying an air pressure gauge would be the accuracy level of the device and its resisting abilities to external disturbances. In most cases personal devices offer less accuracy levels than the ones used commercially. Although if you spend on a high end model, even your personal air pressure gauge device can be highly accurate. One needs to check out to what extent the readings of the device can vary when it is subjected to external vibrations, stresses and also if the battery is low on power. Most of these devices run on battery hence knowing the limitations of your air pressure gauge would really help in operating it properly.
